Read a review by
Damian Michaels, publisher of Art Visionary 'zine, posted on his
ArtZineScene site Sunday, May 23, 2004.
My premiere issue says it all, I simply have
too many opinions and know far too many words for my own good.
The personal computer has made micro-publishing possible, and the
Internet provides connections to kindred individuals, other
understanding artists who nod in confirmation of your quirky point
of view. Ta-da: Your Readers!
A 'zine can be difficult to explain.
My recent answer to the request for a definition:
'Zine: A way to communicate your artistic expressions,
even if the idea is that you have chosen to showcase the artwork and
interviews of someone else. I see a connection to the old "pamphlet"
of political/philosophical ilk that folks would print, post all
around, and then stand in the village square and rant from!
Do-it-yourself publishing: don't wait to have your
insightful poetry "discovered"! Why take oodles of slides to
send off to publishers who will most probably not use them in their
striking international publication anyway?! Electronic
communication is the answer! Power to the people!
Ahem...Okay, climbing down off my soapbox now...
A 'zine contains (generally) art and articles you will not see in
mainstream media, usually because it's a small niche, the sort of
thing a larger periodical will devote an article to.
Because it's related to a magazine it is usually topical, printed
in serial issues, often
smaller than a traditional magazine size, often bound other than
with staples, has some sort of editorial page or comments, and generally
fewer pages--BUT, all these are open to personal interpretation!
There is a great range in quality of work produced, and as many
perspectives as individual publishers. Here at Ink & Ruminations, I aspire to provide,
above all, a work of interest, from which the reader/user will take
at least one cool idea and carry it into her own work.
