Carving your
own rubber stamps is a great way to express your original ideas as
well as use some copy-right free images or photographs to capture
unusual designs (or ordinary designs)! One of my favorite carvings is
taken from a sketch I did of a chair in a catalogue; that got me
started on a whole chair series. The first chair reminded me of a
sketch by David Hockney that made a distinct impression on me, the
evocative loneliness or imminent welcome of an empty chair.
I first connected with other carvers through the
wonderful Carving Consortium
, taking part in swaps and enjoying a rich exchange of art and life
there. I have also been a carving mentor with this group.
Another great Yahoo group is Erasercuts at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/erasercuts/ and the sister group
for swaps
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/erasercut_exchange/
My favorite carving material is PZKut as it's a
bit firmer than the erasers and can take the shallower cuts that
give more detail and allow shading. I use lino carving tools, some
Speedball (usually just
tips #1 and #4), and some
Lee Valley Detail Carvers.
